City adventures

We took a tour of the catacombs under the city of Edinborough. We saw a chastity belt and other torture devices that were used at the time. One of the stories told was of a law that was passed making it illegal to sleep in the parks and streets. So if you were caught they would use a metal wail and heat it up and strike you back with it. If you happened to live through this they would rub salt on your wounds and send you out into the streets almost ensuring you would not survive. So people did not want to worry about this fate so they started to live in the catacombs of the city. There would be 30 to 40 people sleeping in these tiny areas with no sanitation. They would just put straw over the feces and urine to make a bed. Not a welcoming enviroment. Also, the top 2 floors of the homes were made out of wood because they were trying to build homes so quickly. During one fire, most of the city was on fire so in an effort to keep the children and women safe they sealed the people in the catacombs with are made of huge rocks. Then fought the fire for 7 days thinking everyone was safe. When they returned everyone one had died. The rocks had heated from the fires and killed everyone. At this time the guide said they sealed up the catacombs and they were not discovered again until some college students were playing football in their apartment when one of the players went through the wall and discovered this area.
